VE Day: 75th anniversary celebrations from home

3 weeks ago Thu 7th May 2020

VE Day - 75th Anniversary

How to celebrate at home

This year’s 75th VE Day Anniversary celebrations will be different to what many of us had planned, but there is plenty you can still do from home!

Please do not travel unless essential this bank holiday, but if you need to make essential travel, buses will be operating on a Sunday service.

Events

11:00 National two-minute silence
14:45 Churchill speech broadcast on BBC One
15:00 The nation's toast
21:00 The Queen's special address, followed by a UK wide singalong of We'll meet again by Vera Lynn

11am - Two-minute silence

Our buses will be pulling over where safe to do so to join in for the national two-minute silence of remembrance at 11am.

3pm - The nation's toast - "To those who gave so much, we thank you"

As Churchill's original victory speech is broadcast on BBC One, people will be invited to stand up and raise a glass in a national toast, saying "To those who gave so much, we thank you".

9pm - The Queen's special address followed by Nationwide singalong

The Queen's special broadcast is taking place on BBC one at 9pm one – the exact same time King George VI made the same address 75 years ago.

Directly afterwards, The Royal British Legion is calling for people to help commemorate the anniversary by joining in with a UK-wide rendition of Dame Vera Lynn’s – We’ll Meet Again.

BBC One will be featuring the sing-a-long as part of their VE Day broadcast too.

We'll meet again by Vera Lynn

We'll meet again
Don't know where
Don't know when
But I know we'll meet again
Some sunny day

Keep smiling through
Just like you always do
'Till the blue skies chase
Those dark clouds far away

And I will just say hello
To the folks that you know
Tell them you won't be long
They'll be happy to know
That, as I saw you go
You were singing this song

We'll meet again
Don't know where
Don't know when
But I know we'll meet again
Some sunny day

And I will just say hello
To the folks that you know
Tell them you won't be long
They'll be happy to know
That, as I saw you go
You were singing this song

We'll meet again
Don't know where
Don't know when
But I know we'll meet again
Some sunny day
