Information Update – Real Time Information at roadside and on the app

2 months ago Tue 12th Nov 2019

The contract between a company called Trapeze and BCP Council was not renewed as from the end of September 2019. This was a partnership between BCP Council, Yellow Buses and Trapeze. The bus company known as Morebus had ceased being part of this arrangement some time ago and so are not affected. Yellow Buses contributed financially to the partnership.

It was agreed between the partners that the arrangement would cease, however solutions to the implications of ceasing this arrangement was not fully explored.

As a result, Yellow Buses have had to develop an alternative way to supply real-time information to the street furniture and other systems which use this data. Yellow Buses have been working with Ticketer (ticket machine supplier), Passenger (Mobile app supplier) and NPTI (National Passenger Transport Information) to provide the same facilities that we had previously. The new partnership is almost there in getting this system to work. Once it is up and running, a feed from the new system will be sent to the Council to provide count down information at the roadside and to the mobile app. In the world of open data, this will be available to other beneficiaries such as google.

Unfortunately, at this time we do not have a solution to the next stop onboard vehicle announcements. Those vehicles with the previous systems fitted will continue to work until the outboard system stops working. The cost of providing a system to provide this is more than we were paying into the first partnership as a business let alone the cost of getting Ticketer to supply the real-time information.

Depending on the financial fortunes of the business we hope to have the opportunity to develop a system for this during the financial year 2021-22.

We would like to apologise for any confusion or inconvenience caused whilst these changes have been taking place. We hope the new partnership will be able to deliver systems to meet your expectations without additional cost.
